The Mail Service

Day 23

A few days ago I had to reschedule the delivery of a shipment of test booklets that could not be delivered at my school because we are on holiday this week. Today I collected the shipment at the local central office for UPS. That got me to thinking about how we are so accustomed to regular mail delivery. Plus, with Amazon.com one can get many items delivered in a day or two.

On February 20, 1792, President George Washington officially created the modern United States Postal Service. On July 1, 1847, Congress authorized the Postmaster General to release the first United States postage stamps, images posted above.

As a young boy, I collected stamps from around the world. Many of the stamps in my collection came from letters one of my brothers sent to me from his international travels as a merchant marine.

Alla prossima!
