Day 81 of My Italian Learning Journal*
________________________________
As I continue to build my Italian vocabulary I came across the term "false cognates." I had noticed that some similar looking and sounding English and Italian words are confusing. I found a collection for these "false cognates" on a "Speak 7" website ( http://italian.speak7.com/lesson2-7.htm ). I am posting this group of "false cognates" here for easy reference.
Ascolta Questo:
- Di seguito รจ un elenco di falsi amici.
Below is a list of "false friends" (false cognates).
- Vorrei esaminare questo elenco di parole regolarmente.
I will review this list of words regularly.
False Cognates
Alla prossima!

Hi Ted
ReplyDeleteYes,It's true. There're many Engligh words that we call "False Friends" or " False Cognates" (here the difference of meaning: https://linguistics.stackexchange.com/questions/2612/whats-the-difference-between-a-false-cognate-and-a-false-friend)
I "false friends" (falsi amici) sono quelle parole che in italiano hanno un significato mentre in inglese ne hanno un altro.
Altri esempi:
- Agenda not "agenda" (planner, diary) but "ordine del giorno, programma di una giornata di lavoro"
- Argument not "argomento" (topic, subject, matter, theme) but " litigio, discussione"
- Adjust not "aggiustare" (to fix) but "adattarsi, inserirsi, adeguarsi"
- Lecture not "lettura" (reading, to read) but "lezione o una conferenza accademica o professionale".
- Realize not "realizzare" (to fulfill, to come true) but
“rendersi conto, capire, comprendere”
- "stamp" not "stampa" (press) but "francobollo"
- "Cognate" not cognate (sisters-in-low, wives of sons) but "affine"
- "lame" not "lame" (blades) but "zoppo".
and more...
bye :)
