Imperial System & Metric System

Day 61 of My Italian Learning Journal*

This afternoon I drove to a nearby town for an appointment, and on the highway, I wondered why the United States uses the  Imperial System of Measurement and not the Metric System of Measurement. The issue goes back farther than I would have guessed.The British Imperial came from the British Empire that ruled many parts of the world from the 16th to the 19th century. After the United States was established the imperial system was adopted.

• Oggi avevo un appuntamento e ci sono andato in macchina.
  Today I drove my automobile to an appointment.

• Mi chiedevo perché negli Stati Uniti si utilizzi il sistema di misura imperiale (il sistema consuetudinario statunitense) e non quello metrico.
  I wondered why the United States uses the imperial measurement and not the metric.

• Alcune fonti dicono che la modifica del sistema metrico costerebbe molto.
  Some sources say changing the metric system would cost a great deal.

• Ho letto che ci sono solo tre Paesi che usano il sistema di misurazione imperiale: Liberia, Myanmar, e gli Stati Uniti d'America.
  I have read that there are only three countries that cling to the imperial measurement system: Liberia, Myanmar, and the United States of America.
