Like many who visit Venice, my wife and I on our first trip to Italy rode on a gondola. I was reminded of that first trip and the gondola by a book on my desk, a book with an image of a gondola on the cover. I got curious about the history of the gondola and surfed the Internet and found "italymagazine.com" from where I have borrowed some information about the gondola -- interesting and surprising facts.

Have you ever wondered why gondolas do not overturn with the gondolier standing on one side?
Why is it that gondolas do not turn on themselves even though the gondolier always rows on the same side?
The reason is that these boats are asymmetrical and slightly lean to the right.
The weight of the gondolier makes them stable because each gondola is built according to the body of each individual gondolier and the strokes make the gondola go straight because they are asymmetrical.
