Day 98 of My Italian Learning Journal*

Tonight, several of my family members and I will attend a live performance of a seasonal classic story: "A Christmas Story." The play is based on a comedy film directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepherd's semi-fictional anecdotes about one Christmas when he was nine years old and all he wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder BB Carbine. The film has become a classic that is played on television for 24-hours on Christmas Day.

ReplyDeleteNon ho mai visto questo film, ma credo sia bello visto che ho letto che nel 2012 è stato scelto per essere conservato nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti d'America.
Ora alcune precisazioni sulle frasi.
- Stasera io e diversi membri della mia famiglia andremo* a una (o ad una)** produzione teatrale.
* in questa frase il soggetto è "io e diversi menbri" cioè noi, quindi si usa il verbo coniugato alla seconda persona plurale > noi andremo.
** in questo caso si può scrivere sia "a una" che "ad una", sono corrette entrambe le forme.
- E' una commedia che racconta la storia di un ragazzo che vuole un "fucile automatico Red Ryder BB" (o una "carabina" Red Ryder BB") per Natale.
In questo modo è più naturale in Italiano
- E' un film classico trasmesso sempre in televisione nel periodo di Natale.
In questo modo è più naturale in Italiano.

I've never seen this film, but I think it's nice since I read that in 2012 it was chosen to be kept in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress of the United States of America.
Now some clarifications on the sentences.
- Stasera io e diversi membri della mia famiglia andremo* a una ** produzione teatrale (Tonight I and several members of my family will go to a theater production).
* in this sentence the subject is "me and several members" that is "us" (noi), so we use the verb conjugated to the second plural person > noi andremo (we will go).
** in this case we can write both "a una" and "ad una", both forms are correct.
- It's a comedy that tells the story of a boy who wants a "Red Ryder BB automatic rifle" (or a "Red Ryder BB" carabina) for Christmas.
In this way it's more natural in Italian
- It's a classic film always broadcast on television during the Christmas period.
In this way it is more natural in Italian.

Mik, I look forward to your comments. First let me say that you have a wonderful command of the English language, and of how a few different words can change the meaning of a whole sentence. I added a note in parenthesis to point out that the Red Ryder carbine is more of a toy than a more powerful rifle. I also added a new sentence to emphasize that the film is played for 24 hours on Christmas day on one national television station. Keep in mind that I place great value on your explanations.
