Day 90 of My Italian Learning Journal*

Well, it happened after all. It snowed in South Texas. Our last snowfall was 13 years ago. And before that, it was over 100 years. The photo at right is that of the front of St. John Paul II High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, where I work as an academic counselor.
Ascolta Questo:
- Oggi poco dopo l'una di notte ha nevicato nella parte meridionale del Texas.
Today at about 1:00 a.m. it snowed in the southern part of Texas.
- Questo è un evento raro.
This is a rare event.
- Ricordo che l'ultima volta che ha nevicato dalle nostre parti è stata 13 anni fa.
I remember that it was 13 years ago that it snowed here.
- Prima di allora, erano trascorsi più di 100 anni da quando nevicò nella nostra parte del Texas.
Before that, it was over 100 years since it snowed in our part of Texas.

It must have been very nice for the children to attend such a rare event on your side in Texax.
Now some tips on the phrases:
Oggi poco dopo l'una del mattino ha nevicato nella parte meridionale del Texas.
- una è singolare femminile e l'articolo relativo è la una, in questo caso però si usa l'elisione (ossia si toglie la vocale finale alla parole se è seguita da una parola che inizia con volale) e si scrive l'una come correttamente hai fatto.
- "una" is feminine singular and the related article is "la", in this case, however, elision is used (ie the final vowel is removed from the words if it is followed by a word that starts with volal) and it is written as you did correctly "l'una".
L'ultima volta che qui ha nevicato è stato 13 anni fa. (or Dall'ultima volta che ha nevicato sono passati 13 anni).
Personalmente scriverei:
"Ricordo che l'ultima volta che ha nevicato dalle nostre parti è stata 13 anni fa."
Penso che sarebbe preferibile usare questa forma perché nella frase successiva si dice che anche in precedenza ha nevicato, anche se molto tempo prima, quindi è l'ultima volta nella memoria di chi scrive ma non nella memoria storica.
Personally I would write:
"I remember the last time it snowed here was 13 years ago."
I think it would be preferable to use this form because in the following sentence it is said that even previously it has snowed, even if a long time before, so it is the utmost time in the memory of the writer but not in historical memory.
Prima di allora, erano trascorsi più di 100 anni da quando nevicò nella nostra parte del Texas.
- meglio usare il passato remoto "nevicò"
Il tempo passato remoto del modo indicativo è utilizzato per azioni che si sono compiute in un passato lontano e che si sono concluse.
The remote past time of the indicative mode is used for actions that have taken place in a distant past and which have ended. (like the simple part in English)
I think it will be almost dinner time for you, so have a nice dinner.
