CFL vs LED

Several years ago I replaced all the candescent light bulbs in our house with compact fluorescent lamp bulbs (CFL). When some of the CLF bulbs burned out I started to replace them with LED bulbs. The latter type is now advertised as more economical to use and as emitting less heat. Since the CFL's contain mercury I often wondered why they had gained such popularity, other than they used less electricity. The CFL's do not last as long as advertised, but the reason may be that they are turned off and on too much in day to day use. (Grammar corrections for my Italian practice script below are welcome.)
