Day 173 of My Italian Learning Journal*
_____________________
I suspect you will guess what the object at right is. I have been quite busy and I called upon a young man in our neighborhood to mow our lawn. A couple of weeks ago I had spread fertilizer on our lawn right before some rainy days, and our lawn grass was getting tall and dark green. After a bit of Internet surfing, I found an article about the invention of the lawn mower -- it was invented by Edwin Budding in 1830 in England. Initially, it was used to cut the grass on sports grounds and extensive gardens. In the United States, gasoline-powered lawn mowers were first manufactured in 1914. As many homeowners do, I own an excellent gasoline engine power lawn mower; however, I did use a reel mower, like one in the illustration, when I was a boy. (Let's move on to a practice script in Italian -- grammar corrections are welcome.)
