The Oscar Statuette

Day 176 of My Italian Learning Journal*
_____________________

Yes, Oscar is now 90 years old. All the attention tonight will be on actors, directors, producers, and other categories. But do you know how the Oscar statuettes originated? MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a reel of film gripping a crusader’s sword. The Academy asked Los Angeles sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions, and the world-famous statuette was born. The golden statuettes are cast by Polich Tallix fine art foundry in New York. (Next, a practice script in Italian -- grammar corrections are welcome.)
